Impact beyond the classroom

A recent survey from Greenlight found that 75% of teenagers lack confidence when it comes to personal finance. But it’s not just teens that are concerned about their financial literacy and knowledge. According to a 2023 survey, 72% of U.S. adults said they would be “further ahead with their money today if they had a personal finance class in high school” and 88% of adults said high school did not leave them “fully prepared” for how to handle money in the real world. The lack of financial literacy is costing the U.S. population: according to a survey by the National Financial Educators Council (NFEC), survey respondents reported having lost on average $1,819 in 2022 due to a lack of knowledge about personal finance. That is a total of more than $436 billion for the entire United States!

Data from the surveys above demonstrate why financial education is becoming a priority for educational institutions and states. As of August 1st, 2023, 23 states require a semester-long personal finance course for high school graduation, empowering young people with valuable financial literacy knowledge at a younger age, setting them up for a better financial future. This transformation in the educational landscape marks a significant milestone. The shift towards prioritizing financial literacy education is not just a matter of statistics; it is proof that financial well-being is an essential life skill that can greatly impact an individual’s quality of life.
