Welcome to the fifth post in our “Teaching through COVID-19” series. A quick recap for those just tuning in. In the coming weeks, Certiport will be publishing different installments in our series “Teaching through COVID-19”, with each article highlighting a different learning product. These posts are meant to answer your most frequently asked questions about learning products, and how you can use them in a distance learning capacity. Our post today covers TeachMe3D, a fantastic learning platform for PC, Mac, and Chromebook based learning. Check out the details about launching and utilizing TeachMe3D below.
- TeachMe3D is aligned to which courses?
- What features are available in this program to help my students continue learning at home?
- TeachMe3D is all about teaching students to use 3D modeling software, and the course is set-up to help students learn completely at their own pace, either in school or at home. Each course is broken down into chapters, and each chapter has several lessons. Within each lesson, students have access to two videos and an activity.
- The first video is a lecture style video, which teaches key definitions, concepts, and frameworks that the student will need to understand before moving into the programs.
- The second video is a demonstration within the application. The video is entirely web-based, so students do not need to have the application to view the video, but it provides step-by-step guidelines for students to use when completing certain tasks.
- The final piece of each lesson is the activity. The activity will require students to have access to Autodesk software. However, Autodesk has granted access to our tools to students and educators for the past five years with no charge. Make sure to send your students here to get access to these applications.
- How do my students get access and set up their accounts?
- First, you will need your teacher pin number so students can register an account under you. To get this go to "My Account", "Edit My Account", here you will see your pin number. If you want to change the pin number, you can change it here. Be sure to click "Save Changes" when you’re done.
- After you have sent your students the pin number, have them complete the following steps:
- Visit app.TeachMe3D.org/login.
- If they typed in the correct information, they will see a congratulations screen with your information on it.
- Have them complete the form on this page. All they will be required to provide to create an account is their email address, password, first name, and last name.
- Do my students need to install anything?
- TeachMe3D is entirely browser based, making it easy for students to access the material anywhere. For students to view the lecture and demonstration videos, no installation is required. However, if you want students to complete the associated activities, they will need to download the corresponding Autodesk applications to their computers.
- What web browsers work best?
- Any browser should work great.
- Can they work offline?
- No. TeachMe3D’s content is hosted online, therefore all videos are only accessible with an internet connection. However, students can download the workbook and complete the activities without an internet connection (assuming the already have the corresponding Autodesk applications installed on their computers).
- If I need to provide my students printable materials to accompany their online course, what can I give them?
- Each TeachMe3D course includes a workbook, that coincides with the material in the online course. As students are completing the lecture and demo activities, they can answer key questions within the workbook. The best part? TeachMe3D has also provided a Teacher Answer Key for each workbook, so you can easily grade your students’ assignments.
- To access the workbooks and answer keys, simply click the “My Account” menu in the right-hand corner of your TeachMe3D homepage and select “Teacher Resource Center” from the dropdown. All workbooks can be downloaded as PDFs and sent to your students to use. Students also have access to the workbooks within their accounts. Each lesson has the corresponding section of the workbook at the bottom of the page.
- Is there a video/demonstration component that the students can complete before taking any practice quizzes?
- Yes. There are two video components to help students master the material before moving on to the independent activity. The lecture and demo sections are both presented with videos, with the lecture providing key definitions and context, and the demo providing a visual demonstration of the tasks within the software.
- Can I see what my students are doing? What they have completed, how they have done on their quizzes, etc.
- Yes. If you’re logged into your TeachMe3D account, simply select “My Students” from the “My Account” menu in the right-hand corner. From here, you’ll be able to see which videos your students have viewed.
- Is your course broken up in modules so I can assign short learning every day?
- Yes. Each course is broken down into chapters, and each chapter has multiple lessons. TeachMe3D follows the “Tell, Show, Do” model. In other words, there is a lecture, demo, and activity for each lesson. Each of these sections serve a specific purpose:
- Lecture: Each lecture is presented in video format. The lecture will present concepts, definitions, and gives context around the topic that is being presented within the lesson.
- Demo: The demonstration is also presented in video format. The demo is a traditional “follow along” style video, filmed within the software, to show students how to navigate and perform key tasks and activities.
- Activity: The activity is where students test their skills and understanding. This is not presented through an instructor, so students will need to complete this independently.
- What works without downloads and what needs to be downloaded to be fully functional?
- TeachMe3D’s course content is entirely web-based. No downloads are required to complete the lecture and demonstration videos. However, if you would like your student to complete the associated lesson activities, they will need to download the corresponding Autodesk application.
- Can I give feedback to my students within their account?
- Unfortunately, no. You can see students’ progress with the videos, but you cannot provide direct feedback within the TeachMe3D accounts.
