In the ever-evolving world of technology, app development has emerged as a highly sought-after skill. Many educators are turning to Swift to prepare students for careers in app development.
Swift is an intuitive programming language created by Apple. It’s easy to learn, simple to use, and super powerful — which makes it a great language for first-time coders and full-time developers.
In fact, according to data from Sensor Tower, Apple’s App Store generated approximately $43.7 billion in-app purchases, subscriptions, and premium apps and games in the first half of 2022 alone, growing over 5.6% year over year. “When companies make software for platforms, they usually develop for Apple first, because that's where the money is.,” said Brian Foutty, app development expert and Apple Distinguished Educator.
Eager to help prepare your students for this growing field? Brian shares his insights into how teaching Swift has led to significant wins for his students.
Build your own skills
Brian, who describes himself as a "recovering math teacher," transitioned into teaching app development after falling in love with his first iPad. Despite the steep learning curve, Brian persevered and eventually mastered Swift. "I just went through and coded and then cursed and coded some more for a long time," he recalls. His determination paid off, and he became the first high school teacher in the United States to teach Swift to high school students.
Combine curriculum and certification
After spending time learning these skills on his own, Brian became incredibly passionate about teaching app development in schools. He believes that learning Swift is not only fun but also equips students with a valuable skill set for the workforce. Students are further empowered when they earn their App Development with Swift certification, which they can use to validate their knowledge in higher education and the workforce.
"It’s an incredible model. Students get the experience building their own apps and earning their certifications. The combination shows that they are competent, and that they know their stuff. My students have been able to transition successfully, straight into the workforce," he says.
Celebrate success
Brian’s students have benefited significantly from learning Swift. One student graduated from high school because he earned both his Swift Associate and Swift Certified User certificates. Another student enlisted in the Army and advanced to E3 Sergeant when he showed his commanding officers his App Development with Swift certificates. A third student became a published app developer and is now thriving in college while studying computer science.
Skills in app development are highly transferrable, and useful in nearly any field your students are interested in pursuing.
Time to dive in
New to coding or app development but eager to get started? Brian believes that making software is one of the best ways to learn technology. "I think it’s great to say, ‘I’m going to tinker around and see what we can do with this app. Let's break it. Let’s see what we can do.’ That immersion provides rich learning opportunities and teachable moments,” he says. In short? Don’t be afraid to dive in headfirst.
In conclusion, the power of Swift in app development is undeniable. As Brian has demonstrated, teaching Swift can open doors for students, equipping them with valuable skills for the future.
